Avondale, Pennsylvania is a small borough located in Chester County, PA. The town is so tiny that the population is just under 2,000 people as of 2010. The entire borough has a total of 0.5 square miles, just past Kennett Square, PA before the town of Oxford, PA. Avondale’s school district is extremely small, with only a few public schools and one private. The borough is home to many great restaurants that hold exceptional ratings and reviews, some of which include Sake Hana, Taqueria Moroleon Mexican Restaurant, and the Hilton Crabhouse Restaurant. The London Grove Village is the newest shopping center in Avondale where some of these restaurants are located as well as an Acme, Lowe’s, a fitness gym and other popular attractions. Avondale was home to the Avondale Colliery, which was a coal mine in the town back in 1800’s. It was where the famous Avondale Mine Disaster occurred, which at that time, was the largest mine disaster in American History at the time. The disaster took the lives of 110 workers, thus beginning the Workingmen's Benevolent Association, which was one of the first unions created to represent coal miners in the United States. This association no longer exists today.
