Delaware County, Pennsylvania

The Delaware River gave Delaware County, Pennsylvania its name when it was founded in 1789. Interestingly the lowest point in Pennsylvania is on the Delaware River in the borough of Marcus Hook (in Delaware County). Delaware County, adjacent to Philadelphia’s west border, holds the status of a suburb of Philadelphia, and is part of the Delaware Valley area.

Delaware County was created from part of Chester County. Chester City served as Delaware County’s original county seat until 1951 when Media became the county seat, and Media has remained the county seat since. Five miles north of Media is Ridley Creek State Park in Delaware County. This Pennsylvania State park is located in the Townships of Edgmont, Middletown and Upper Providence. Ridley Creek State Park is also adjacent to the John J. Tyler Arboretum. The arboretum’s history goes back to 1681 when William Penn signed a temporary land transfer agreement with Thomas Minshall which included the site of the arboretum.
