Downingtown, Pennsylvania

This borough in Chester County boasts deep early industrial and manufacturing roots that start before the Revolutionary War. First known as “Milltown”, this small village was home to two mills and considered to be the last area before you entered the undeveloped western frontier, now known as Lancaster. A visit to Downingtown’s Historical Society will show you the early mills that made this small village an industrial giant in its day. Some of Roger Hunt’s gristmill still stands today and is on the National Register of Historic Places. This small town played a vital role in the Revolutionary War as it was used to store food and provisions for the troops. During this War, Milltown’s hospitality shined and the first tavern was opened by Richard Downing. Over the years the Downing family continued to grow the small village and after the War of 1812, Milltown became Downingtown.

Today, Downingtown’s Historic District is on the National Register of Historic Places. Stroll down East Lancaster Avenue and see the beautiful brick buildings, relax in Dr. Edward Kerr Memorial Park or enjoy a great meal at one of the many restaurants. Like Microbrews, a visit to Victory Brewing Company is a must with their home brews and family fun atmosphere. During the summer months, canoe or kayak the nearby Brandywine River or play a couple rounds of golf at the beautiful Downingtown County Club.
