If you enjoy poetry, The University has received growing recognition as the nation’s center for formal poetry and has established a poetry center for sponsored readings and annual book competition. Want to bring the inner architect out in you, continue down High Street to see the Greek Revival style of the many buildings that gave West Chester the nickname “Athens of the West.”
High Street intersects with the only two streets in and out of downtown, Gay and Market Streets. During the summer months in West Chester, Swingin’ Thursdays are a summer street festival with great food, live entertainment and something for the whole family. Both streets boast over 55 award winning restaurants and pubs, many of which have nightly entertainment. Outside dinning is a must in this beautiful bricked sidewalk atmosphere. Until recently, court in West Chester, Chester County was held at the historic Chester County Courthouse built in 1846. In 2008, the Chester County Justice Center was officially opened to the public. The Chester County Justice Center is a modern 7 floor building which houses the Chester County Court of Common Pleas along virtually all other county legal departments and many other government services.
